Every child born to Asian parents has gone through the lackluster and ubiquitous Asian bob hairstyle. Either the parents take the liberty to fashion your black locks or they take you to another Asian that will do the same and proclaim it to be the "current trend". At least, that was my childhood experience, captured here:
So I decided to take it to a whole new level with my amateur (read: nonexistent) hairdressing. Let's make it an angled A-line bob. It's edgy, smart, and well-sported by Victoria Beckham here:
The brave soul who answered my challenge was my dear mother who wanted her biannual trim. There was much re-trimming to be had but after 2 hours, the back resembled what I had in mind. It even followed her jawline! If only I hadn't cut off those extra 2 inches in the front.
I understand now why I would pay $20 for a precisely-executed haircut done in an hour. Anyways, I'm extremely glad my client loves the fresher look :)
Challenge yourself to do things on your own that you would normally have someone else do (with or without pay). It may turn out to be a burgeoning passion or a disaster; in either case, I often realize how expensive such a service is or how much value is packed to each dollar. Hair cutting is definitely the latter. On the other hand, I can make some restaurant dishes at 1/4 of the cost that taste better.
I'm going to be adding hair-cutting to my to-master list. Time to say goodbye to my childhood friend, the Bob.
